So, *rewatched* this video, and honestly...I'm in full agreement with the spirit of this video, except for one problematic, and, I think, enormous point. The well of IP law is extremely poisoned. That is, IP law is the reason that big pharma firms can price gouge individual diabetics for insulin. IP law is the reason that Disney still holds the patent/copyright laws over Mickey Mouse, who should have been in the public domain decades, if not generations ago. IP law is the reason that some random evil widow can sue a YouTube car building channel for a build of Eleanor (see @LegalEagle 's channel for this story). If IP laws were sane, that is, 20 years from the moment of getting the patent and/or copyright (which gave JK Rowling more than enough time to become a billionaire), then I think a lot more people would be happy. Artists would have more than enough time to capitalize off of their original works, and AI algorithms would have more than enough works to train their models on without running afoul of any IP laws. However, the extremely draconian nature of IP laws gives me zero sympathy for the letter of the law. "Death of the rights holder + 70 years" is an absolutely absurd period of time, especially when said rights holder is an undying corporation. I.E. you know all those employment contracts you sign that all your work is the IP of a firm? Yeahhhh, that is just stupid. If it was just "you have IP protection? Cute, here's 20 years, and then this is in the public domain", then a lot of this "my work is being used without my consent" would be a lot more palatable to swallow. Because on its face, "this is my work, it's being used without my consent" *does* sound like it holds merit. But once you factor in just how awful IP laws *are*, then, no, all of that goes out the window. Heck, just look at the shit that Corridor Crew got on twitter for using AI trained with Vampire Hunters D images, which came out in the early 2000s, and, once again, should be in the public domain. So yeah. There's definitely more than one side of the argument here, and allying with ginromous pharma companies gouging insulin-dependent patients...that's not the play. And I won't support anyone who says it is.
