I’m not an artist in the sense that I draw, but I’m a writer. And I’m severely dyslexic. And I do use things like autocorrect to help make writing easier, but I’m also able to fact check myself, it just takes a lot of time. At the same time, as painful as it was to learn how to read and write, something that came so easily to my classmates, and something that people take for granted. I’m glad I did it. Even though I only had picture books and rhymes to help me out, and I was always behind everyone else, it didn’t discourage me from wanting to read and write Plenty of people have said that I should just use speech to text rather than take a longer time typing than average, but that takes even more time to fact check. As in, did it translate speech to text correctly? Most of the time the answer is no. I’m not a native English speaker and I’m a part of a language minority, so I’m not expecting miracles, it’ll be a long time until speech to text is trained well enough and that does need the assistance of humans to tell the program what it gets wrong. Will it get there? Eh, probably? I’m just not holding my breath as long as AI translations are still trying to sell me the wrong kind of nuts in the nut mix at the grocery store, it can’t even translate text properly yet AI is a tool. It’s not like it doesn’t have any uses, some artists have taken their own photos and painstakingly made art using AI and their own copyrighted works. The most common thing you hear is that it’s very hard to generate images that are actually good, that are what you want rather than eh good enough, these are people that take pride in what they do and unless they’re purposely trying to make something creepy (at least this one artist did, human bodies melting into each other in an otherwise idyllic setting and it’s only slightly off, you can tell there’s something wrong before realising that oh yeah that’s what it is, really cool horror art because it’s so innocuous yet clearly nightmarish. I love it but it’s nightmare fuel for real lol, also they only used their own photographs and are advocating for stricter rules for AI in regards to copyright infringement). If people want good enough, just use a random image of google search like people already have been doing, or if you want to make AI art, then learn from the actual artists using it in an ethical way Mainly AI is good for being a slightly better calculator, and people still need to know how to fact check it. Like the abhorrent translations of professionally made AI translators— excuse me what? 🤨 I thought it was something like google translate but it’s made by professionals..? I’m guessing they don’t understand the languages it’s translating to and from because I could do better and my brain is so dyslexic I was told that it was surprising I’m not illiterate. Safe to say, we’re pretty far off from being able to replace ourselves with AI, even though it can be useful. Just fact check it. It’s not just the amount of fingers and toes that it can get wrong so don’t trust it blindly or it will be the blind leading the blind, or as some old guy wrote; Men have become the tools of their tools. Money is not required to buy one necessity of the soul. Most of the luxuries and many of the so-called comforts of life are not only not indispensable, but positive hindrances to the elevation of mankind. — Henry David Thoreau I’ve written sci-fi, and one of the things that a pioneer in artificially modifying himself keeps asking himself is how far is too far? How will he know if he is about to lose the thing that is driving him to explore not only the universe but also the limitations of self? His curiosity, his creativity, his reasons, his humanity? At what point does one go from living to simply being alive? Like is he ever going to become tired of being alive, even though he technically can die there’s a lot keeping him alive, but he can’t see himself not living, not having things to live for anymore, as a shell simply existing— when everything has been said before there’s only silence
