I question whether these companies are as close to creating a super-intelligence that they claim or give the impression of... they need investment money, and it's a gold rush fueled by FOMO. They're desperate, no profits yet, and they have no idea if there ever will be profits, so they have to flim-flam us that what they're working is REALLY powerful... I don't know. Sam Altman and the other CEOs quoted here don't know much more about AI than you and I. Take Musk for example, rich people think they know everything but he's an idiot. That other guy who talked about "growing AI", maybe he was told to say that... this could all be a huge tech bubble, the biggest ever. But yes they should definitely be stopped by governments, because what they're doing is increasing global warming, stealing water and human creative labor, in order to replace humans. They're evil.
