I don't think self driving cars will reduce cars on L.A. roads. It's well agreed that public transport (buses, trains and trams) reduces traffic and has the ability to substantially reduce traffic if the commuter's dwelling is nearby to the station. In the case of a city like L.A. the entire city is designed for automobiles from the ground up, therefore implementing public transport poses significant challenges for any government, not to mention the cost. Then there's the other issue no one talks about: safety! I live in Australia and after seeing the videos of American cities, I'd definitely buy a car ... or take a Waymo (if necessary) because you can lock your car's doors and drive away from crime. Just saying. But Waymo's are better than Uber or catching a Cab.
