Zackary-
I work in the industry calibrating the vehicles you talked about with ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems)
I cannot comment on Tesla as my company never sees them as they are EV's and we do not have the tools and safety equipment needed - what I can say is they are much more dangerous than Waymo because Elon in a cost cutting measure relies on cameras and removed LIDAR FROM ALL VEHICLES
The actual self driving cars as you pointed out (Waymo, Tesla) are in a VERY dangerous position right now and they should ABSOLUTELY be regulated and not testing on our streets.
However -
The other manufacturers have come a long ways and improved safety leaps and bounds. GM super cruise and Ford blue cruise are very cool culminations of multiple different systems coming together to allow someone TO WATCH THEIR VEHICLE DRIVE WITH HANDS AT THE READY (they can watch your eyes with cameras or hands with sensors and disable systems if you are not paying attention). BUT this isn't in city streets and neighborhoods in the burbs - it's only for mapped highways/freeways. No stopping you at stoplights or navigating twisty corners or going through pedestrian areas - only highways/freeways. These use radars, cameras, and GPS.
There's an entire industry of people like me out there calibrating these safety systems on vehicles after crash repairs to get them back up to standards. And while I do not have the numbers to give you I can tell you the amount of dangerous crashes has fallen significantly due to these systems. The person texting and driving that would have rear ended someone on the highway at 70mph only does it at 10-30mph now because the cameras/radar saw the car stopped ahead in time to brake most of the speed away. So technically these systems are still "getting in crashes" but the crashes they are getting into are much much safer. I can also tell you in the hundreds if not thousands of cars I have calibrated I have almost never seen LIDAR. Is that because it's really that much better or more expensive than most people want to pay? I'm not sure but it can see through situations that cameras cannot such as rain/fog/smoke.
I definitely think as part of this video you should have rented (or maybe go to a dealer for some test drives) a car like a GM or ford with the super cruise options and tested these things out.
