Current AI, to my understanding, is not intelligent. It's just a super tweaked statistical machine that builds responses to inquires from the collective knowledge of humanity. It has no sense of self, it's like a snapshot of concentrated human experience through the ages. And it already has put a strain on current society in myriad of ways. Scientists behind these models can't understand how it works exactly. If it's possible for these kinds of machines to gain sentience, would we even know if it got it by then? Everyone is so occupied to be first, not realizing that we may be going straight towards a black hole.
