Artist here! There's a fun thing about humans taking inspiration vs. AI copying, which is also part of copyright. Humans need to put in additional effort beyond the inspiration part. That effort and the fact that they are human beings also makes them eligable for copyright.
Of course, you can not copyright a style, and I also don't think you can sue anybody for generating an image, however: Generators are trained on pre-existing art, usually ignoring their copyright status, and using copyrighted art without permission (regardless for which purpose and in which way, if the result is published) is directly against copyright law.
And there is another controversy you missed, which is the enabling of art theft via AI image generators.
