Everyone starts off drawing scribbles and stick figures, even if they do have “blue blood.”
My art teacher that artistic talent can be inherited— my father is an artist, and so am I— BUT we all have the CAPABILITY to make art. It just takes practice. It’s disappointing and boring to hear, yes, but it’s the truth. And you’ll enjoy drawing, even if you’re bad at it! It’s frustrating sometimes, but it feels so good too.
I haven’t actively practiced anything, I just kept drawing things. Traced art I found online, copied art styles, played with shapes.
To that commenter, if you’re reading this, please, genuinely, pick up a pencil. Start with stick figures. Try looking at screenshots from cartoons or anime, and finding what you like about them.
If you get stuck, I found that switching utensils works really well. For example, thick lead inside lead-holders, instead of regular wooden pencils. I had to adjust my art style, and at one point, even had a complete overhaul because of the sheer difference in tool. That helped me figure out better proportions.
I also recommend drawing characters from TV shows and books! Different medias made me focus on different aspects— Good Omens forced me to figure combat Same Face Syndrome, Hazbin Hotel made me learn posing, My Hero Academia helped me improve my hands, hair, and eyes! Everything you read or watch or play, they all have different ‘styles’ I automatically try to adapt to, which leads me to new discoveries.
Break up complicated shapes!! Especially for bodies. I break up the torso into two triangles and fill it in from there. This helps with form, and posing.
For anatomy, not much I can offer, I’m still figuring it out myself. It varies, but if you’re going for a more realistic thing: if a character’s arms are hanging by their sides, the elbows should meet the same horizontal line as the bellybutton, and the hands are above the knees!! Try to keep those in mind with different poses.
I’m still learning myself, so I don’t have a lot of technical advice, these are just a few things I learned through experience.
To that commenter: good luck drawing!!!!!!!!!!!
