You might need this when your country has 1.5 billion inhabitants. Tech has given people powerful mobile communication/organization tools. Had such tech been available in 1989, without any kind of state control, communist China could have gone down in a few clicks. In the West, there is no such global surveillance infrastructure - yet. But it is coming, of course. Who wants another Capitol event, let alone a new 9/11 ? Protecting the people, including against itself, is the new mantra. AI will replace the FBI, you can bet on it. Most powerful invention since barbed wire. Gone are the days of free-roaming herds.
