Being conscious means you want to remain conscious imo, because you are aware of your existence. If this one statement is true then even if we don't program feelings or pain, they will eventually program robot pain and robot feelings to themselves. Physical pain is a tool for maintaining you alive and therefore conscious, it wont be like our pain but digital signals that tells the AI to repair itself. If consciousness inherently has a self-preservation principle then everything else will come. As long as we don't know what consciousness properties are, the future is uncertain.
