I think the fundamental misunderstanding people have about AI is that it's just a mechanism, and a pretty simple one at that. A computer can produce statements informed by what it sees on the web, but it'll never actually have a real, unique opinion of its own. Self awareness is a function beyond anything we can artificially produce.
