I think they may be blowing this out of proportion although I'm not sure. For one, Hawley seems to refer to reading or copying a copyrighted book as "theft." He should know better. The Court has clearly stated that copying is not theft (even if it violates copyright). 2. The Court has also made clear that copying doesn't violate copyright unless it's for a commercial purpose. Usually that would mean, making a ton of copies and advertising and selling them. Or charging people for mass access to copyrighted works. But this AI thing seems to be in a grey area. Training the chatbot to build its knowledge base? Using copyrighted materials. I don't know for sure how that would violate copyright. We'll have to let the Supreme Court figure it out I guess. But to sit here ranting about theft and acting like using torrents to copy books is somehow illegal for everybody -- that's just outright false. We can copy stuff and read it or watch the movie or play the game all we like. nobody gets in trouble for that. It's only when someone's doing it for a profit that they get busted. That's the whole purpose of copyright laws in the first place. Commercial protection. It doesn't bar anyone from reading a book.
