If one wants to understand the limits of AI, I suggest becoming deeply familiar with:
1. Rice's Theorem - any non-trivial property about the semantics (aka behavior) of a program is undecidable. This implies that we cannot create a program that determines if another AI's goals are "perfectly aligned" with human values, ensuring it will always be safe.
2. The Symbol Grounding Problem - The question of how words or symbols inside a computer system can get their real-world meaning. Encoding real world phenomena into a computer friendly representation always involves a massive amount of information loss about what we humans actually experience.
