Okay, this isn’t a support for AI art, but I think there’s a misunderstanding in what people mean by “reference images”. Personally, the place I would find it most useful is the art I use for my Dungeons and Dragons campaign, which is just a little personal project that I enjoy with friends where I like to have random character portraits or location images to show them as players. Basically, I’m using images for other people to reference instead of taking time to sketch out every NPC or potential NPC that my players may talk to. I could just give only verbal descriptions, but there’s something more fun and immersive about giving players images of the characters they meet. Now, I don’t ever generate anything myself, but I can definitely say that my pintrest and Google search results have been filled with AI images whenever I go looking for art, and there have been moments where I’ve been tempted just to generate certain characters because I couldn’t find something that I was exactly what I was looking for (Seriously, if someone can find me a better resource for my elderly uncommon races like Drow, Owlins, Aarakokra, Firbolgs, or even Tiefling NPCs I would be forever greatful). Honestly I’ve taken to using art from Magic the Gathering because hooo boy do those artists deserve some love and respect for the incredible pieces they make! I want to clarify further that this is never anything I intend to publish or sell, nor do I make any money off these games. I fully despise the idea of stealing or using AI art to avoid having to pay a real artist.
