That’s so dumb. From the engineering perspective, having more than one sensor and then building in the complex matrix of a decision table increases the risk. Giving a computer one simple calculation is the smartest thing to do. Also LiDAR has a massive downside that it’s a point cloud, meaning it’s gonna be less effective in any reduced visibility driving scenario because the beams are hitting dust particles are raining or snow. The reason cameras of the smartest choice outside of cost is a simple fact that it’s the exact same as what you and I have- visual ability to see and recognize. Pair that with an exhaustively trained artificial intelligence system and now you’ve replaced the human brain. All that’s left are a few actuators to operate the pedals and turn the steering wheel. Elon stuck true to his logic that you must keep engineering design as simple as possible, and only replace back when you’ve proven you have to. Waymo’s engineers over engineered the product and reduced complexity overtime. It’s the wrong way to go.
