What I’m gathering from this is that the automated trucks will start to operate on linehaul or terminal to terminal routes first. So drivers for companies like FedEx, UPS and LTL companies who use linehaul drivers will be affected first. Then the second group of drivers will probably be the drop and hook drivers, I’m thinking companies who run out of the rail yards, companies who have trailers staged at their customers. Then the third group will probably be companies who deliver their own goods to their stores, so companies like Walmart, target, Costco. The last group will probably be P&D drivers, food service, fuel haulers, car haulers, and other driver who makes multiple stops a day. I also believe that autonomous trucks wouldn’t work for spot market freight, since some of the shippers and receivers have only a few dock doors so you will most likely be live unloaded and loaded. Plus the backing at some the smaller customers will be a challenge for an autonomous truck.
