All the other semantics and what-ifs about AI aside, that part about 'getting creative and finding something that AI can't do" as an answer to the question of how to cope with white collar displacement? Yeah that's the most enragingly glib and dismissive take on the problem I can think of. Everyone in my generation got conned with the brainwashing of "go to college to learn how to do work with your mind that they can't automate so you don't have to suffer the misery of having to work with your hands for a company who'll pay nothing while trying to replace you with a robot" during their formative years. At the urging and pressuring of all the "mature adults" in their lives, most of them incurred a SUBSTANTIAL debt to learn "specialized skills" that were "automation proof" only to graduate with a crippling financial burden in the way of rent and home ownership, which even adjusted for inflation are insanely higher than the costs their parents and grandparents faced at their age, WITHOUT said student debt in the way. And what does the generation that told them "don't be a blue collar sucker, go to college" do now that they're in a bind? Cynically call their own kids and their cohorts lazy, wasteful and stupid for bowing to the pressure THEY APPLIED TO THEM to go to school at massive cost because they heard it from a fucking talking head at FOX or a podcaster are making easy, lazy money peddling the age old "the problem with kids nowadays" shtick for likes and ad dollars. So my question to Neil is: what resources are millennials, Gen Y and Z going to expend to discover these magical new AI-proof industries and hone their skills in them? I'm pretty sure I know the what sort of "solutions" are coming down the pike for that problem--and the cure is worse than the disease.
