There's a number of problems with self driving, and Tesla have more issues than most. Tesla only uses camera. The problem is that cameras have their limits. In northern countries, road markings disappear almost entirely during winter. It removes a lot of what self driving cars depend on to understand the environment around them. Worse yet, the white color of snow makes it extremely hard for cameras to get a proper perception of depth. Lidar is far better at handling that issue. The other major issue is that cars are self contained. They don't talk to each other. We have self driving for trains and vehicle talking to each other is at the core of the system. This feature of CBTC is why we've been able to diminish headway between trains. It should be obvious that this is a feature that needs to be built into self driving cars. Another feature that needs to be added is detection of cellular signals. Most peoples nowadays have a cellphone. Detecting cellular devices would allow cars to know where peoples are and which direction they are going. Tesla is playing fast and loose, and so are governments.
