I did autonomous vehicle research throughout the 2010s for what became Aurora, and many of my coworkers went to Waymo or Kodiak. Humans are horrible drivers. I got into it because I worked as a tow truck driver to put myself through school.
I'll admit most of use developers expected the socialist wave from 2012 to continue though. The entire point is to make a world where humans need not labor ever again. It's really simple to automate human tasks. It's the only thing neural networks can do...human tasks.
