The thing that people don’t seem to understand is that ChatGPT (and other language models) doesn’t actually know or understand any of what they’re writing. It has been trained on millions of documents and thus knows what kinds of words occur in what order in a certain genre of text. It knows that texts labelled as academic often contain brackets with names and numbers in them, but it has no clue why they occur or what they mean.
