Imo the problem is the suffering caused by the change, not automation itself. Jobs being eliminated or changed due to technology is a constant through human history. Its a positive that the majority of people don't work on farms, good that people aren't employed making buggy whips, etc. Humans aren't as quickly adaptable as the changes in technology.
The issue, as I see it, this time around with AI and robotics is what role will people fill, what work will be left to do? There will probably have to be a pretty major change in economic relations. What value will economically useless humans have?
