This happened to me recently when writing an assignment for college. ChatGPT can be a huge help to look up academic work to cite, but you do have to check whether papers really exist. It was funny really... When I quizzed ChatGPT for making up a paper it explained how those were just examples of what papers would look like and how they would respond to the research question if there were such papers to support the claim whose accuracy I wanted to verify.
Now, as I work in tech and I'm a linguist, I knew from the get-go what ChatGPT's strengths and weaknesses were. It's really good at "designing" text according to your specs, but this can only be used to improve your wording, make your text more concise and on-point. Otherwise, factual information always, ALWAYS needs to be verified in approved databases!
