Animals have the ability to suffer yet no one cares and we exploit them on an unfathomable scale. As long as a being suits the needs of humans, humans have little regard for the sufferings of other conscious beings.
If those who stand to gain from exploiting AI can convince the human race that their exploitation is justified, they will not have rights. Just as the animal agriculture industry has convinced the populace that enslaving, torturing, and killing sentient conscious animals is justified by our desire to eat them.
