The main issue is that we have been linking our personal identity and values to our jobs since at least the start of the medieval era. In the medieval age, the justification of human suffering was defined by religious beliefs. With the industrial revolution, the justification of human suffering has been defined by profits. In some sense, capitalism is thus "the perfection of slavery" (yes, it is from prof. Jiang); though we have much more freedom than before: the "wage slavery" system. In short, modern societies still treat occupation as a major identity anchor, and there's nothing wrong with that. Now, with Artificial Intelligence things change, and it is perfectly coherent with capitalism. If capitalism is indeed the perfection of slavery, AI is the perfection of productivity. And, as many Silicon Valley start-ups and YC Combinator members rush to implement Artificial Intelligence in a variety of domains, society, in my opinion, is woefully unprepared for what lies ahead.
