This is happening in academia as well. I work behind the scenes in an academic library in the UK for document supply, where a big part of our job is to source and supply materials for inter-library loan. Particularly since January we have had several requests, from both staff and students, where they have provided citations that do not exist. Articles that do not have matching authors/years/journal titles, book titles that do not exist, chapters that don't exist in books. When we then go back to the patron and ask them where they saw what they are asking for, we then find out ChatGPT created it.
