Artist that copy the style of other artist don't do anything unlawful but somewhat unethical. In artist society he will get bad reputation.
Style isn't protected by law as idea, just exact implementations are. You are free compose song in the style of Depeche Mode without copying lyrics and exact melody and nobody can do to you anything by law.
AI and non-artist just don't care about reputation. AI just imitate style not just objects. If prompt to AI is "draw me a pigeon in style of (artist_name)" and that original artist never draw any pigeons then there are no copyrighted outcome. Bad for artist because "user of AI" just don't worked even a single day not mention years to get to this style.
P.S. I perfectly fine understand artists and are on their side. Alas AI can be trained to be an imitating monster without copyrighted materials, it's just will result in a longer training period.
