The problem with Tesla’s approach is that in bad visibility (dense fog, snow storm, and dirty cameras - especially if the camera gets dirty while driving) are actual possibilities. If you want to create true self driving, this is close to impossible. Tesla’s approach is easier and more elegant as multiple kinds of sensors can confuse the car’s. But, redundancies help in an imperfect setting.
