i remember being 14 and writing roleplays with my friends so immersive that my grades were sinking and i was failing classes because i lived to push the plot forward and nothing else. that ofc made my mom take away my phone routinely and it quite literally felt like addiction and withdrawals. i felt empty as if the only source of my happiness got taken away and i was crying because i couldn't go live my better life online (just picture the height of wattpad. romancing rockstars, sex drugs rock n roll, high speed chases, violence, injuries and hospitals. teenage venting and navigating the whole spectrum of emotions). but what i had that sewell didn't were friends at school that i could continue writing on paper with or just shit talk our moms for not understanding. it's so heartbreaking to think how alone he actually was when he thought he found his love :(
i can easily see my younger self become a victim to such isolation which just makes me feel so bad for today's kids. i can only hope predatory apps get better regulated and children don't feel like their only chance at connection lays with ai
