Deep faking is a form of identity theft, as it rips a person’s private identity from them and makes it more publicly controlled, usually by agents who may mean them harm. Problematically… It’s genuinely next to impossible to enforce, just like actual identity theft. Improving security around various sites would help, but plenty of the Internet isn’t regulated. There may come a point where we need to focus our protections on deep fakes that effect people in leadership positions or large scale organizations rather than celebrities and Internet personas… Because they actually CAN be kicked in the wallet. A deepfake of a CEO isn’t sexy, but could move the stock market. Emma Watson is hot, which may be the entire incentive for fabricated material of her. Plenty of the BS around celebrities (Scarlet is a great example) has nothing to do with income. It’s just sick people with sick fantasies, who want a way to see them played out.
