Scarlett Johansson has a point. Someone with her means, is unable to combat deep fakes effectively, so good luck to anyone else. The sensible thing to do when you are against an adversary you can't defeat is to try to remove the content when you have time but accept the near impossibility of getting rid of it permanently. Unfortunately, the internet is forever in most circumstances, and in a lot of circumstances having data forever is great but a small subset of humans have decided to do despicable things which hurt others. With how open and anonymous the internet can be it's currently not possible to punish all of those involved. It would be great to be able to punish those who have created these images and videos but such restrictions might become tools for governmental authorities to control and arrest those who disagree with their beliefs. There is no good solution except for service providers to shut down this specific form of abuse but once they do what's stopping them from suppressing certain political views or forms of speech that company disagrees with? It's a truly ugly and difficult topic when it comes to the internet. The internet contains nearly all of mankind's knowledge but it's run by thousands of companies and providers who have their own financial ideals at their root. Stopping this abuse would be prudent but where do we as a society draw the line? Will service providers actually listen to us on where that line is drawn? It's doubtful but hopefully our humanity will prevail.
