A long time ago I was at a conference on developing and using new material technologies. It was buzzing with fascinating ideas I hadn't even imagined. Then graphene was announced, amazing revolutionary technology, but it was the end of most of the materials being developed in that conference. Despite graphene not actually being able to replace most them. The money went to the tech with the biggest buzz. And maybe revolutionary graphene deserved the money, but a lot of problems went unsolved to invest in it.
AI feels like that did but apocalyptically bigger.
