There's still one question about AI that has not been adjudicated. Have you heard of photographer David J. Slater? Between 2011 and 2018 a series of disputes took place about the copyright status of selfies taken by Celebes crested macaques using equipment belonging to him. Slater has argued that he has a valid copyright claim because he engineered the situation that resulted in the pictures by travelling to Indonesia, befriending a group of wild macaques, and setting up his camera equipment in such a way that a selfie might come about. Slater tried to copyright their works but In December 2014, the United States Copyright Office stated that works that lack human authorship, such as "a photograph taken by a monkey", cannot have their copyright registered at the US Copyright Office. I would argue that likewise AI-generated code *cannot be copyrighted* and neither can entire apps that use only AI-generated code. So if your company spends millions of dollars to build AI-written software or systems I am free to take them and re-market them myself. Worse than that, if I as a human than make some changes that improve the application and you want to steal it back you can't without finding and removing all of my human-generated changes because I can copyright the entire thing!
