I’m a disabled artist, I’m autistic and have ADHD, as well as general anxiety, occasional panic attacks and OCD as symptoms of those things, and I’m anti AI. I’d say AI is insulting to actual artists, but from what I understand they aren’t even close to comparable; one is a glorified calculator running off of averages it got from stolen art while the other is a human being. Imo, AI just revealed how little society actually understands and respects art and creativity. Getting back to the original topic, I use art as a way to cope with my disorders, creativity and anxiety have an inversive relationship with one another so when I’m able to snuff out my anxiety by creating art, art keeps my hyperactive mind from ever being bored because I could just think about new ideas if I have nothing else to do, and creating art is a major part of my sense of identity and purpose. To claim that AI makes it more accessible to disabled people is disingenuous at best. Assuming that the implication that art is inaccessible, especially to disabled people is true, as I’ve already said, AI generated images are not comparable to art, it cannot possibly make art more accessible because it’s not art. However, it’s outright ableist when you know the implication that art is inaccessible, especially to disabled people is simply untrue. Sure, it’s definitely more difficult to make art if you’re physically disabled but it’s not impossible. Their argument insinuates the terribly ableist idea that disabled people simply aren’t capable of learning certain things, which is untrue. I doubt any of them actually care about us, they’re just grasping at straws to excuse what they’re doing, and disabilities are an straw to grab because of the ableist idea that disabilities are inherently tragic and deserve pity; all they have to say is that they’re helping and gullible people who don’t know better will believe them and actively spread that ableist rhetoric.
