The largest benefit to autonous robots in war is, hands down, going to be numbers, because numbers beat everything else, both as weapons and as sensors...which means you can drive unit cost very very hard towards zero and sacrifice almost everything else and still get a more total "war fighting power" per dollar..the end game is nano-robots, obviously, but every step down in size and up in numbers is an almost guaranteed win as long as they are autonomous to a reasonable degree and can sense things and break things.
All the focus on super sensors and stealth and big drones and faster drones and smarter drones and all that are just putting chains around your own ankles in the longer term, but they may each keep up for a while at greater eventual total cost..
