Can you imagine if we were told CAD was bad for engineers? Excel was bad for accountants? Tractors were bad for farmers? Charting improvements were bad for doctors? In fact we probably already crossed this bridge with illustrators when Adobe created Illustrator.
There's a great confusion now between the essential qualities of a professional (creativity and judgement) and their most time-consuming activities and a great confusion about "job creation" politics. At least at this simple efficiency level of analysis we should not be wasting people's time with tasks a tool can do much more quickly and efficiently, freeing the designer for higher value ideation and evaluation tasks.
It doesn't mean there's no reason to do the obsolete work methods, though. Just as people still garden and hike and bike and knit and carve wood and balance checkbooks and engage in arithmetic games despite the existence of powerful machines capable of the same tasks, artists might find their creativity and judgement are enhanced by engaging in some sketching, shading, coloring, etc. Even finger painting could unlock new lines of creativity (and become more fodder for the artistic AI). Allowing AI to do the work that's more repetitive and labor intensive (not unlike the last three decades at Pixar) frees humans to embrace our inner explorers and researchers and caretakers rather than cranking out minutia under deadlines.
