Studies on the efficacy of role based prompting see varied results but in many cases adding role instructions doesn't greatly improve the results if it improves them at all and can actually backfire. It really all comes down to a few key factors: what kind of result are you after, how detailed and specific are the role instructions, and does the format of response you're likely to get back from an AI playing that specific role necessarily contribute to the utility of the result. If I need a very easy to understand explanation vs a very detailed technical explanation then role prompting it as a 3rd grade teacher vs a scientist will certainly tailor the output and suggest any kind of additional information to include. But telling the AI that it's smart and helpful and always gives back the most accurate answers doesn't add much per se, if anything.
