I got involved in expert systems back in 1989, probably before most of you were born! And we have not really progressed very much beyond that except for speed of execution and an excellent advancement in marketing. AI today is just an advanced form of pattern matching by models that are good at learning history but are incapable of even advancing the science a quarter of a step. Programming is not just about writing code, it's about learning a way of problem solving and you can't learn and become good at something if you don't practice! Yes you most likely will not spend as many hours writing code as I did, but if you don't learn to think like a software engineer, then you won't survive very long in the profession!
