Finland has done away with homework a long time ago and they have one of the best educational systems in the world. They also have one of the shortest school days in the world with just 5h.
They believe that having children learn in a more relaxed environment and that they get plenty of free time after school to play and hang out with friends, makes them more receptive thowards learning.
It also gives teachers more time off and not having to take work home with them so that they're also more relaxed and eager to teach their students.
So while they're definitely on to something, time will tell how effective it is.
