Automated trucks might become a thing for the straight line haul segment of trucking until...the first time a family gets wiped out by one of them. The resulting lawsuit against the trucking company AND the manufacturer will raise insurance on these trucks to the point where it's no longer a viable option. Trucking companies will no longer see it as an economical option. And the rest of the industry is too complicated with too many variables to rely on automated trucks. Weather being the first thing that comes to mind. How does an automated truck decide that it's time to park because the weather got too dangerous to carry on? How does it then go find a safe place to park? How does an automated truck fuel itself or change a tire on the side of a highway? How does it know that an overpass coming up on the reroute it had to take because of a fatal accident that shut down the highway it was on is too low for it to go under? Or the bridge it now has to go over only has a 5 ton weight limit? Or any one of the million other variables that require human logic and decision making on a daily basis? I'm not worried about an automated truck taking my job because it couldn't do my job. I'd like to see an automated truck load or unload an 85' boom lift rental and navigate the 'not made for trucks' areas I have to navigate on the daily lol
