Well the thing is that, at least in the sky, they already have AIs capable of flying across countries and spying with no human interaction for long periods of time. AIs don't need to be as good when they're flying since there's very little in the way of obstacles that need to be programmed into. We're already remotely targeting things for bombing, but the AI in the drone craft helps to pick targets. It's not a stretch to think that soon we can have them go to a location and do this without help.
