I have been waiting for the past two decades for politicians to bring this up - and I reluctantly agree with Bernie's take. If the reigning oligarchs in the U.S. were really dedicated to improving the plight of the least well-off, they could have been doing that for years now. The only rationale I can see for why they have not done so that aligns with lofty humanitarian intentions is that they are somehow waiting for some vaguely defined critical threshold of AI productivity before ceding their economic dominance to the good of all. Not holding my breath for that. The film, 'Elysium' seems to capture the trajectory we're currently on.
That said, if the hoped-for freedom from economic stress somehow materializes, I will gladly trade the current labor that I have to perform to try to ensure the economic security of my family for labor I choose, which directly makes their lives better and happier. That is where I find meaning. My 9-5 job? Not so much.
