When all this AI stuff started, I remembered that in college (back in the '70) I took a course over AI and all the programming was done in LISP. My conclusion was that LISP was not the proper way to implement an AI. About 5 years later, I worked at a hardware company that decided that they were going to create an AI machine. It was basically a machine that implemented LISP on the motherboard. My conclusion was that wasn't going to work either because is was based on LISP. But, by then, I understood that we didn't understand enough how well the brain worked to create hardware to implement it. Certainly, a Von Neumann architecture was the wrong approach. When these LLM solutions started gaining popularity, my immediate reaction was "That's still not going to work. The machine is still von Neumann." I'm glad to see that my prediction was correct. Someday we'll have a functioning AI but we really need a lot more research on how the brain actually works.
