Something a good friend of mine once said, which has stuck with me since: it takes a very smart person to solve difficult issues in AI. But, once the hardware and software is developed, it takes very little in the way of smarts to copy the solution and apply it to something else.
We're arguably far away from a system smart enough to, say, navigate around real-world terrain and autonomously choose and engage targets. But then it's a problem that only needs to be solved once...
