I feel like it could be used as “reference” but more like how you can make a bunch of tiny thumbnails to play with the arrangement or colour balance of a piece. As someone who struggles with colouring my own art I feel like it would be nice if there was a tool that could just fill it in for me in a bunch of different ways so I could “reference” the colours and do it myself ultimately. I feel like you could do something with the layout as well but I understand layout a little better and I definitely wouldn’t tell anyone to use AI unless they were seriously struggling to find any real references, because there’s no thought you can’t understand why they chose that layout like you can a real reference, maybe if you know more about colour than I do you’d feel the same way about that example. The whole thing feels a little like “well I guess you can but there are other, way better options.” Also side note… I have an older family member who has a background in fine art who eventually stopped drawing and painting, took up photography only for that to slowly dwindle and (after some other stuff in between) he now makes AI art. I think he just got tired of all the effort and wanted to still feel like he’s making something but I still find it weird. (It’s not like he sells it or anything and he’d never bash human artists for their work) Any idea what he’s thinking? 😅
