As has been noted in other comments, AI was/is trained on the content of the internet. Hence it acts as a sort of mind mirror, reflecting back stuff that came from us in the first place. Of course there are monsters in there. Just like there can be an unseen monster lurking in the psyche of a "respectable" serial killer. Making a quasi-sentient machine is one thing, making a happy sane one, is another matter entirely. Small issues that society seems not to have considerred.
