Personally, I think the fears of people being "miserable" when AI replaces intellectual drudgery leading to mass unemployment are overstated and limited in scope, so long as a new mechanism for distributing the means of subsistence and having a good life is found pronto, as it was during covid. There are many models for humans not needing paid, 9 - 5 work to feel a sense of purpose. Parenting, caring for gardens and pets, engaging in athletic or other physical pursuits, looking after things - homes, cars, bicycles, public recreational facilities, nature, preparing meals, spiritual practices and rituals, arts and crafts - people can occupy themselves meaningfully in all sorts of ways. For many people, "work" as our culture defines it is an awful and unmitigated stressor in their lives and they'd be happier if it were not there, many jobs foster competition rather than cooperation which is not good for human happiness or harmony, but we will need a shift away from valuing things including activities according to monetary value. Barry Jones wrote decades ago about the urgent need to skill people for using greatly increased "leisure" time. Indigenous cultures found purpose and meaning without the institution of "work". Spiritual communities aspire to things other than 'getting ahead at work' or acquiring things through labour - money- accumulation. We need to turnaround from demonising those who do not work in paid jobs and considering them less "valuable" - a big shift in thinking and indoctrination is needed. So much work already is really unnecessary "busywork". When I was young it was common to believe that machines would mean we would all work 20 hours per week in the new millennia (ie, now). Instead, "work" has expanded and we are all working, and more than ever, and retirement age has been pushed back. It will be an enormous social shift and we are not preparing for it.
