A hundred fifty, to two hundred years ago, the Painters guilds faced an "existential crisis": the camera. The painters responded by the rise of impressionism followed by "modern" and "postmodern" art that (to my eyes has very little artistry in it). But then the camera evolved into motion pictures (and thus all these Hollywood writers now have jobs). Musicians faced an existential crisis at the turn of the century with the invention of the phonograph and then radio. You've got to realize that before 1900 if a bar wanted music, they had to have LIVE music or one of those newfangled player pianos. If you had a party with your friend (or one of those Pride & Prejudice type balls) you had to have LIVE musicians. You can say the same thing about the Typewriter (IBM was one of the few companies on the ground floor of developing the technology that would replace their own primary project). Or the horse drawn carriage or wagon. AI writing is a tool that (if they cared to "learn to code" or in this case "learn to prompt") could increase their productivity and help them make writers block into a speed bump instead of a wall. They don't need to be terrified of it. They do need to realize that technology changes industries. It happens all the time. AND there will be something on the other side. There are still people who paint (and then take their painting to a guy with an industrial sized scanner who can scan the painting at a super high resolution and then make prints on everything from full sized canvases to 8x10 pictures to throw blankets to t-shirts to greeting cards. There is still room for guys like Thomas Kincade even as most professional artists today are paid to paint digitally. The real "existential threat" as Mikey pointed out, is that they keep writing CRAP that's more about propagating a DIE/LGBTQ agenda than about telling a good story.
