The main sticking point is that under Capitalism: automation benefits the owners of the means of production, not the workers.
I think automation, where is makes sense, is generally a good thing.
But when a business invests in automation: they reap the benefits, not the workers that they fire.
Free market evangelists will point out the machine operators get paid more.
But the system is currently set up so that you need a job to live.
It does not have to be that way: for example under georgism the government taxes land, but not improvements on that land, to encourage efficient land use. The proceeds can then be rolled into universal basic income.
