The problem is not the technology, or even fakes, it's people having irrational, irresponsible, and harassing responses to what amounts to a rumor or dream that depicts a fictional likeness resembling those portrayed (even though it's not the actual person). The instance of the teacher demonstrates this, there were zero grounds to fire her, but people unable to distinguish between real and fake made uninformed and discriminatory punitive decisions. Even if the teacher had made porn of herself, that would be her right to free speech (just as deepfakes are a form of free speech). The problem is bullies and the lack of technology awareness, not the technology. And if people are going to respond so stupidly to deepfake porn, when it comes to deepfake propaganda, well, then we're all screwed.
