You’re deluded if you think a company can be “too big to fail”! Nokia, Kodak, Yahoo, Xerox, Blockbuster – all failed due to bad business decisions. Gaming is going to be transformed in coming years. You probably won’t even need 3D models for games as AI will generate the game on the fly. With AI, it’s only a matter of time before someone uses AI to create better tools than Blender or better games engines. Probably best backing open-source solutions, in my opinion, otherwise it’s a matter of time before someone recreates all closed source software using AI and making them open source. That’s exactly why VS Code and Copilot were open sourced by Microsoft – in order to compete. I think it’s hard to quantify how much impact AI is going to have on the industry. From my experience with LLMs, their creativity is quite poor and not so unique… that’s a quality that we still possess that’s better. I think we will all possibly end up as product owners or project managers/directors, coming up with creative ideas, creating specs with the help of AI, and guiding AI through the process of generating the envisioned game or software. Skills as VFX & 3D artists and software developers will help create the right prompts to get out exactly what you want, or to understand exactly what AI has churned out. But even this complexity will likely eventually be taken over by AI. Your analogy of “people still painting” isn’t a good example because physical painting and digital art are different mediums. People still value hand-made physical art. 3D graphics and VFX and AI-generated content is the same area, and I can’t see people preferring 3D models crafted painstakingly be artists to ones generated in seconds by AI (and companies are interested in cutting costs and maximising profits). We have to watch the market developments and keep evolving with changes to try and remain relevant.
